A Christmas Carol

Script Excerpts

Act II, Scene 5

(Scene rises in a setting room.  ADULT BELLE is surrounded by several children to whom she is reading a book.  The CHILDREN can hardly hold still.)

ADULT BELLE

(reading a book)

Robinson Curusoe by Daniel DeFoe.  “I was born in the Year 1632, in the City of York…

(A knock is heard at the door.  The CHILDREN immediately run to the door excited.  The door opens and MAID is standing there loaded down with gifts.  The CHILDREN each take a gift and exit into the house to open them.)

MAID

Belle, I saw an old friend of yours this afternoon.

ADULT BELLE

Who was it?

MAID

Guess!

ADULT BELLE

(Laughing)

How can I? I don't know?  Mr. Scrooge.

MAID

Mr. Scrooge it was. I passed his office window; and as it was not shut up, and he had a candle inside, I could scarcely help seeing him. His partner lies upon the point of death, I hear; and there he sat alone. Quite alone in the world, I do believe.

ADULT BELLE

Poor man!

Song 13A—Sometimes I Wonder

Sometimes I wonder how it could have been, might have been.

If things had gone on how they were.

I wondder if he would have changed or where we would be in life.

I loved him. Could he have loved me more than his money?

I loved him. Could he have ever been changed.

Sometimes I wonder how it could have been, might have been,

if only he would have loved me.

We could have been so happy.

But now, I only wonder.

(BALLET DANCE of SCROOGE and BELLE commences to finish act.)
