A Christmas CarolScript ExcerptsAct II, Scene 2(SCROOGE and the ANGEL pass through the wall and find themselves on an old country road with no sign of the city.) SCROOGE Good Heaven! I was bred in this place. I was a boy here! ANGEL #1 Your lip is trembling. Is that a tear on your cheek? SCROOGE No. It’s just a speck of dust in my eye. Please take me where you would. ANGEL #1 You do remember this road, don’t you? SCROOGE Remember it! I could walk it blindfold. ANGEL #1 Strange to have forgotten it for so many years! Let us go on. (SCROOGE and the ANGEL walk down the road. As THEY are walking, lights come up on the school scene. STUDENTS are seated as the TEACHER addresses them.) TEACHER Now, students, I want you to remember throughout this break, who it was that made the lame beggars walk and the blind men see. I want you to remember the true meaning of this Christmas season. Song 10—What is This Time of Year?

TEACHER and STUDENTS
TEACHER I ask that each of you remember the true meaning of Christmas as you celebrate with your families. Have a blessed holiday. Merry Christmas! Class dismissed. (The CHILDREN, except for YOUNG BOY SCROOGE, exit yelling “Merry Christmas.” SCROOGE is forced to move out of their way. The TEACHER exits with one of the CHILDREN, leaving YOUNG BOY SCROOGE alone.) ANGEL #1 These are but shadows of the things that have been. They have no consciousness of us. SCROOGE I knew all of these children once, they were in my school. ANGEL #1 The school is not quite deserted. A solitary child, neglected by his friends, is left there still. SCROOGE (Sobbing) I know. His mother is dead. His father holds him a grudge. ANGEL #1 Why does his father hold him a grudge? SCROOGE She died in childbirth. His childbirth. (SCROOGE and the ANGEL move down the road into the school. YOUNG BOY SCROOGE sits at a desk, alone, lonely, reading.) SCROOGE Poor boy! ANGEL #1 Pay attention, Ebenezer. YOUNG BOY SCROOGE (reading a book) Robinson Curusoe by Daniel DeFoe. “I was born in the Year 1632, in the City of York… (As YOUNG BOY SCROOGE is reading, a young lady, LITTLE FAN, comes in and covers HIS eyes with HER hands.) YOUNG BOY SCROOGE (struggling to get free) Who is that? (finally getting free) Little Fan. What are you doing here? LITTLE FAN Oh, dear, dear brother. I have come to bring you home, dear brother! To bring you home, home, home! YOUNG BOY SCROOGE Home, little Fan? LITTLE FAN Yes! Home, for good and all. Home, forever and ever. Father is so much kinder than he used to be. Home is like Heaven! He spoke so gently to me one night when I was going to bed, that I was not afraid to ask him once more if you might come home; and he said Yes, you should; and sent me in a coach to bring you. And are never to come back here. We're going to be together all the Christmas long, and have the merriest time in all the world. YOUNG BOY SCROOGE O, little Fan! LITTLE FAN Come, we musn’t keep father waiting. (YOUNG BOY SCROOGE and LITTLE FAN exit) SCROOGE Father sent me off to an apprenticeship at Mr. Fezziwig’s after just three days at home. Fan pleaded for more time, but he refused. ANGEL #1 Always a delicate creature. But she had a large heart. SCROOGE So she had. You're right, Angel. ANGEL #1 She died a woman, and had, as I recall, children. SCROOGE One child. ANGEL #1 True. Your nephew, Fred. SCROOGE (Uneasily) Yes. ANGEL #1 Come, Ebenezer. We must continue. But remember what we have seen. |
